Last time, we talked about the first big tip for nonprofits on Twitter, the law of reciprocation. But we’re not done: it’s time for Twitter Tip #2.
Nonprofits getting on Twitter for the first time can be like kids let loose in the candy shop. It’s easy to get excited and start throwing hashtags, @ signs and following anything that moves. Not so fast. Twitter’s awesome, but it’s possible to jump in too fast, and end up regretting your decisions…
Watch to learn Nonprofit Twitter Tips #2 – Follow Sparingly:
Transcript:
Last time, we preached the first commandment of Twitter. Remember it? Thou shalt follow the law of reciprocation. Today, it’s time to present the second Twitter commandment for your nonprofit.
Thou shalt follow sparingly.
Now, the first instinct when you log onto the Twitterverse is to go “follow crazy.” The more people you follow, the more people will follow you, right? Wrong! Put the computer mouse down slowly and back away from the follow button.
Nobody likes the follow-crazy tweeter, and it all relates back to your social media street cred.
You want to be a person of stature in the Twitterverse. A person with a solid reputation. And trust is instantly built on the amount of people who are following your account…until they see the equally massive number of people you’re following, that is.
So hold your head up, and build your brand the old fashioned way. Follow the right people, produce good content and eventually, followers will come (provided you follow all of the Twitter commandments).
Get out there and weed out the people who don’t add anything to your online purpose. Choose wisely, nonprofit tweeps. And eventually, the right following will come. Thanks for watching.
